The establishment of our nation is now facing the greatest difficulties. We have pinned our hopes on the allies or the UN for our independence, but our independence has been thrown into disarray. In such a grave crisis, we cannot rely on foreign troops, so now we have no choice but to live or die or solve our problems with our own national strength. It is impossible to unify the country by holding a general election or enacting a constitution, as this would divide the nation. Even if the UN persuaded us to establish a separate government, it would not be a government that we could pass on to our children and grandchildren.
Whether it is the Communists or people with any other ideologies, we are the Korean people with the same blood, language, ancestors, and morals, not a foreign people, and therefore, in this time of imminent crisis, we must sit down with our own people and crush any outside conspiracy and intrigue and find our way forward. Thus, I decided to resist the temptation of foreigners and the opposition of some people at home and participate in the inter-Korean talk. There are some who are concerned that I would come out with no result, but I see great hope in our path. After this trip to the North, there could be some kind of conspiracy depending on the change in the situation in the South. If I kept still, I would have had a peaceful life. How can I, who have spent 70 years of my life loving my people, loving my country, and living for independence, stand by and watch 30 million brothers and sisters fall into the bottomless pit of hell for the sake of my own comfort? There is much talk in North Korea that Kim Gu is coming to surrender and that he has repented, but this is not the time to talk about those things. These are not the words of a foreigner, but of fellow countrymen, so how can we point our fingers at them? I am determined to sit face to face with my fellow countrymen, who are brothers and sisters who we share blood with, and draw out the final decision together, in order to find a way for our reunification, independence, and the future plans, despite all the insults and slander. For the sake of the national spirit and unity, I will leave, regardless of success or failure, to find independence and a path for our nation. |
