| I have come to visit my homeland after reading the letter that I received in Yonan. Who would have thought then that after three or four long years under the same sky, we would not be able to see each other face to face! Alas, this is called liberation for us. If I write about the bitter and sorrowful circumstances encircling me, it may trigger shedding tears of us, so, I’d rather not to mention it
At any rate, we stepped down on the soil of our native land; and we are very much grateful to the two allies who have expelled our enemy Japs and made us return home Thirty millions of our countrymen, who have escaped from the venomous mouths of snakes and scorpions, are also deeply and profoundly grateful to the two allies. However, we have a joyful and brilliant scene at front of us on one hand, and at the same time, have a gloomy side on the other hand because of unavoidable contractions between the two allies. Friend, what should we do with this? Whenever my heart aches and I miss my friend, I go through the dirty bag and reread the letters of hospitality I received in Chongqing many years ago. Among them is a telegram message that had been sent to me like this. "今年三月先生給學武君的貴函, 今十月初才收到, 我們今日一切以民族利益爲基準, 不應有些毫成見, 我們對先生來延一次的意向無任歡迎" (Your letter sent by Hakmoo in March of this year was received at the beginning of October. Since we take the interest of our people as our standard, our opinions could not be different. We welcome your intention to come to Yan’An.). Another telegram that was sent to me and other organizations is also written as follows. 「我們不問地域南北, 派別異國, 誠心團結別實事連絡, 如能促進會師鴨綠之實現, 諸位若能同意, 淵可以從中斡旋」(If you will agree that we should not inquire into the differences between geographical bases and the factions, but unite in sincerity and communicate in truth to facilitate the realization of meeting the army at the Yalu River, I will arrange it as a middle man.) And these things are recorded. 「If I once visit Yan’An City for the communications and coalition, do you think that both Koreans and Chinese will welcome me? About this, we sincerely welcome you and Chinese side will also do so. 」. My dear friend, our circumstances are much the same as we were then. Until the reunification of our homeland is realized and our independence is complete, we cannot neglect our duties. We will make a last effort, and I am sure that you, too, will feel a serious responsibility to resolve the issues laid before us. My dear friend, when our friendly allies may wish to aid us by their favors, how could we accept them if we are not ready to receive them because of our disorderly situation. And so it is why the U.S.-Soviet Joint Committee has been fruitless. We also do not see any hope to draw out an outcome from the work the UN Commission of this time. If so, what then shall we do? Do we have to give up the promised independence as God would decide it? My dear friend, many people here in the South consider the other part of the 38th parallel line a different country. The same may be true in the North. They do not like leaders of both sides to sit together and in fact many of them have been disappointed with the situation and openly express negative views. Do you think we need to divide by ourselves our homeland permanently, although divided temporarily by foreign powers, depending on ideology or action? My dear friend, we rather divide our bodies than do our homeland in half. How long could we see our people dispersed and wandering? Dear friend, we are different individuals but it is true that we are the same patriots. How could we dream of solution made by hopeless foreign powers while sitting comfortably on our responsibility and conscience despite that life and death of our people, crises of our homeland and security of the world depend on this moment? Therefore, after Woosa(尤史; pen name of Kim Kyusik), you and I, are convinced that our problems can only be solved by ourselves, we have asserted to hold a meeting of the leaders of the North and the South. We further determined not only to insist on this, but to put it into practice. This is why I wrote this letter jointly with Woosa. We alone are not strong enough but because the combined power of passionate patriots in both the South and the North will be strong enough, I am confident of our success once we gather under the same hearts and slogan. Moreover, if we initiate this scheme by you and General Kim Il Sung in the North and Woosa and me in the South, the vast majority of people will support us. If so, how could it fail?
