After living abroad for a long time and being ignorant of the domestic situation, I can briefly summarize what I have experienced and felt in my domestic life for the past year is that our nation, which has experienced severe national hardships unprecedented in 40 years of slavery, still does not have sufficient national awareness.
I have wasted precious time over the past year without accomplishing anything because I have been dreaming in vain of becoming something thanks to others. Now the great powers of the world are showing their gratitude for the liberation of the weaker peoples and their willingness to help and nurture them, but we, the people, are unfortunately receiving the opposite, namely, suffering. Behold, we, a single nation, are being suffocated by the unexpected 38th parallel. Look at the policies of the North Koreans toward the South Koreans and the measures taken by the South Koreans toward the North Koreans. For example, the recent ban on the export of rice to North Korea, announced in Decree No. 127, is really a decree against a foreign country. Children in the South will not be able to pay tribute to their parents in the North, and parents and siblings will be forced to watch helplessly as they starve to death. In the new year, we should renew our awareness that we should not wait for international commitments to solve our problems, but should do it with our own strength. We should feel more poignantly that only after this giant realization will the light shine on us. |
