1946. 5. 1. There are other ways to support our independence besides trusteeship
The statement of Mr. Um Hangseop of the Korea Independence Party

After the publication of the U.S.-Soviet Joint Commission Statement No. 5, views were sought on it. Among the declaration suggested in the statement No. 5, the paragraph 3 of the decision of the three ministers Conference is not clear enough, and the requirement of the signatures of representatives from parties and organizations written on the last part of the declaration does not give us enough time to consider it.

Such prudence is to be expected and affirmed from those who are entrusted with great responsibility at a time when the fate of a nation and the destiny of a people may be at stake.

We cannot fail to admire the great democratic spirit of the Soviet Union for giving all democratic parties and organizations the opportunity to meet and consult on a uniform basis, without any distinction between pro and anti-trusteeship.

We are especially grateful to Lieutenant-General Hodge for issuing a series of responsible statements to clarify raised questions.

Even after the fifth statement, we were willing to cooperate with the U.S.-Soviet Joint Commission. The Commission¡¯s work is to cooperate the completion of our independence and further if we concurrently insist that the allies assist our independence by the way of non-trusteeship, they do not have good reasons to impose the trusteeship.
